Peace and quiet are two words that best describe the bedroom community of Battlefield today as a small city butting up to the Springfield city limits. But it hasn't always been peaceful and quiet as it is named for its proximity to the 1861 Battle of Wilson’s Creek, the second major battle of the American Civil War. Wilson’s Creek was the first major Civil War battle fought west of the Mississippi River, and the scene of the death of Nathaniel Lyon, the first Union general killed in combat. Although a Southern victory, the Southerners failed to capitalize on their success. Several Battlefield streets, parks and other landmarks are named for events and people related to the battle, such as Nathaniel Lyon Street. Battlefield has experienced rapid residential growth for the past decade nearly doubling its current population of 5,000 residents. Large subdivisions have been built in all areas of the city and many new commercial businesses are now locating in the area to serve the many residents who have chosen to live just outside the big city. Godfather's Pizza, Subway and Wicked Wok are just a few of the restaurants that have placed outlets in this developing area along with Dollar General and Price Cutter chains. There are two light manufacturers who call Battlefield their headquarters: Aurora Canvas makes custom boat covers that are sold all over the U.S., and Battlefield Wire manufactures approximately 75% of all wire used for fishing lures worldwide. Russell Cellular, a premium Verizon retailer, is also based in Battlefield with over 180 locations throughout the United States. Young students living in Battlefield attend Wilson Creek Elementary while older students attend classes in Republic, Springfield or Clever depending on location. The City of Battlefield is approximately one mile southwest of Springfield, seven miles east of Republic and one half mile south of the James River Freeway. Boundaries are generally Republic Road on the north, Wilson Creek on the west, and Farm Road 131 on the east and Farm Road 190 on the south. State Highway FF runs through the center of town and is the primary access road for residents to enter and depart.
