Conveniently located on newly-expanded Highway 13 between Kansas City and Springfield, the city of Bolivar offers the benefits of a bustling metropolis partnered with the peace and serenity of a rural setting. This Polk County seat is home to 10,000 people surrounded by recreational lake areas that furnish good fishing and all types of wild game. Bolivar also has an excellent and plentiful work force with the type of people that it takes to make manufacturing and business successful. Bolivar R-1 School District, home of the Liberators, has an AAA rating and features four award winning campuses. Most recently, Bolivar High School was nominated for the National Blue Ribbon Award by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Bolivar is also home to Southwest Baptist University, a four-year co-educational liberal arts center, the Bolivar Technical College, Polk County Christian School and the Missouri College of Cosmetology. Citizens Memorial Hospital, Bolivar's largest employer, was named one of the Top 10 rural hospitals in America in 1993 and most recently, joined the list of "Best US Hospitals" as voted by US News in 2013. Since opening in 1978, the healthcare facility has grown to include 29 clinics and satellite operations. Landmarks in Bolivar include the Polk County Museum, Aldrich House and the Dunnegan Gallery of Art featuring western art and images. The new state of the art YMCA provides recreation for area residents as well as golfing at the Silo Ridge Country Club and Bolivar Golf Club. Dining venues are plentiful in the Bolivar area ranging from home cooked meals at the well known Smith Restaurant or a sit down meal at the Red Apple Family Restaurant. For more variety, check out south of the border meals at El Rodeo Mexican Restaurant, Boone's Barbecue Barn, Main Street Mediterranean Cuisine or oriental at Oseyo's. Bolivar has existed as a city since November 10, 1835, when proclaimed as such by the Polk County Court and designated as the county seat. Bolivar was organized as a fourth-class city on February 15, 1881. Early settlers in the area came primarily from Tennessee, and chose the future site of Bolivar in part because of Keeling Spring, and in part because it lay along the trail used by the Overland Stage. The naming of both the town and county resulted from suggestions put forth by the Campbell brothers, three grandsons of Ezekiel Polk, who had settled here with their families. The county was named Polk in honor of their grandfather, who was a distinguished colonel in George Washington’s Revolutionary Army.
Bolivar is proud to provide the best of all worlds: thriving businesses, awarding-winning schools, a first-class university, state-of-the-art medical facilities, compassionate churches, active civic organizations, peaceful parks and limitless recreational opportunities. This friendly community consists of teachers, farmers, health care workers, technology leaders, scholars, artists, musicians, and business people of every variety, all pulling together to create an exceptional home for current and future residents to live, work and play!
