Mention the words "festival" in southwest Missouri and the town of Fair Grove will surely be the first name to pop up. During the last full weekend of September, over 40,000 visitors and local folks line the streets for an old-time parade that kicks off the two-day Fair Grove Heritage Reunion. This celebration has over 400 crafts booths, traditional music and several early-day demonstrations like watching corn being ground in the Old Mill. Located 14 miles north of Springfield on US Highway 65, the historic downtown Fair Grove square features several shops, flea markets, cafes, a gazebo and the town's original pre-Civil Ward cemetery with a restored log school house. An old fashioned "ice cream social" is still held in this community, attracting area residents, many dressed in clothes from that era. The small town style of living with a sense of community is still alive and well in Fair Grove! The Fair Grove Historical and Preservation Society began in 1977. In 1984, members purchased Fair Grove’s 1883 grist mill and two acres of adjoining land that became a Greene County Historical Site and listed on the Registry of National Historic Sites. Since then it has been restored as one of only two working "steam-powered" grist mills in the United States. The mill ground's pavilion is an overnight campground on the Trans American coast-to-coast bicycle route that provides showers and restrooms. It is also the location of the area's largest farmer's market providing fresh vegetables and fruits along with small animals for sale. Today, there are nearly a dozen subdivisions being developed by area builders and major stores such as Dollar General and Subway are dotting the landscape of this historic village. Every small town has the typical country diner and Fair Grove is no different. Grandma K's Country Kitchen serves up a great breakfast while lunch and dinner may be found at Hilltop Pizza or Golden Star for Chinese variety. The Fair Grove Swap Meet is held every Saturday during warm weather months, offering an outdoor flea market of new and used bargains. The Fair Grove School District was recently named to the list of "Best High Schools" in the nation as published in US News magazine, earning a "Bronze" level rating in 2014. School leaders completed a new FEMA storm shelter/safe room for students and community members alike to use during a tornado warning. The safe room was featured on the nationally televised Today Show. Walking trails along a wooded creek is enjoyed year round by the 1500 residents of the Fair Grove community at the Fair Grove City Park which is also home to the city's new library and
city hall/community room. A total of three parks serve the recreational needs of the community including sporting events. Dog owners are free to bring their pets and stroll along the scenic paths to escape the hustle and bustle of big city life.
