Once known as the "Strawberry Capitol of the Midwest", the city of Monett is famous today for its racing track and industrial growth in a time of downsizing and corporate cutbacks. This Lawrence County community has experience both tremendous residential and business growth making it the most watched city between Springfield and Joplin. Since 1970, racing fans from throughout a four state area travel to the Monett Speedway where competitive, country-style racing has endured for nearly half a century. The track has the title of the longest continuously operating short track in Missouri, promoting a real family-type atmosphere. This entertainment venue offers weekend racing for all ages, with races scheduled from late March through mid-September. The City of Monett is a working partner with businesses serving a national and international scope. Monett is headquarters for EFCO, a major manufacturer of custom windows, and Jack Henry and Associates, Inc., one of the fastest growing and largest suppliers of integrated computer systems for banks and other financial institutions. Tyson Foods, International Dehydrated Foods, Inc., Schreiber Foods, Miracle Recreation Equipment, Dairy Farmers of America and many others have plants in Monett. In 1887, Monett was established and marked its beginning as a Frisco Railroad town. This facilitated the growth in agriculture trade, retail commerce and small manufacturing. Monett developed an economy of much diversity including livestock, apples, tomatoes, cigar factory, ice plant, razor/cutlery factory, creamery, poultry, dairy and the famous “Ozark” strawberries. The first licensed auctioneer in the state of Missouri operated with the Ozark Fruit Growers Association. Monett was also the home of the first YMCA in southwest Missouri called the "Railroad YMCA" built in 1898. A progressive Southwest Area Career Center serves 14 area school districts and features a new state-of-the-art facility. Monett R-1 School District has four other campuses serving over 2,000 students. From 1927 to the early 1950’s, Monett Junior College operated in conjunction with thehigh school. Degrees offered included Associate in Education and in Science. College enrollment reached 100 by 1936, but WWII caused decreased enrollment and it was discontinued. Their most famous student and coach was John Q. Hammons of Springfield. Today, both Drury University, Springfield, and Missouri Southern State University, Joplin, have satellite campuses in Monett, as does Crowder College, Neosho.
Monett’s renowned city park system, consisting of more than 110 acres, combines the natural peace and beauty of the Ozarks with the modern functionality found in state-of-the-art leisure living communities. The community has a new YMCA community center with an indoor aquatic center for year round use. Area golfers have three courses to choose from: Windmill Ridge Golf Course, Bryce Oaks Golf Club and the Monett Municipal Golf Course.
