Many communities on the edge of Springfield refer to their city as a "bedroom city" to the metro area - topping that list would be Nixa - the "master bedroom" of the adjoining towns! This premiere suburb is located six miles south of Springfield, Missouri, and 30 miles north of Branson, Missouri, on Highway 160 just four miles west of U.S. Hwy 65.   Nixa is one of the fastest growing cities in Missouri. According to the 2010 U.S. Census figures, Nixa’s population stands at nearly 20,000. Over the past 20 years, Nixa has grown 353%, from a population of 4,192 in 1990 to its current population. Nixa prides itself on the fact that it is a master planned community, where pro-active leaders have guided and facilitate the community’s quality growth. Nixa's mission statement “Neighbors committed to an exceptional quality of life”is a mindset, it’s not just another cliché. Nixa Public Schools has been "Accredited with Distinction in Performance" by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for 10 years in a row.  Nixa Public Schools is an innovator and a leader in the field of public education.  From the strategic planning process to the day-to-day operations, Nixa Public Schools strives to prepare students for their future. From standardized testing, to co-curricular activities, to athletics, Nixa students consistently score higher academically than the state average and maintain high GPAs while being involved in school activities. Nixa is located in Christian County; the fastest growing county in the State of Missouri. In fact, Christian County is growing faster than any other county in 30 states. A study by the American City Business Journal, in Buffalo, N.Y., shows Christian County as one of the top metropolitan counties in the country for growth potential. Every great community has a local festival and Nixa has a unique celebration in Sucker Fish Days. A local barber named Finis Gold started Nixa Sucker Day in 1957, and it has since been a longstanding tradition with the people of Nixa. Locals would often close up shop and skip school for the day to go grabbin’ for Suckers. The fish were then frozen until there was enough for a big fish fry. This annual event connects the entire city with good food and lots of entertainment.  One of Nixa's early civic leaders was Nicholas A. Inman, a blacksmith who moved from Tennessee in 1852. Inman established a partnership with Joe Weaver and opened a blacksmith shop in Ozark. Inman's family home site of 160 acres adjoins the present day corporate boundaries of Nixa. 
At a town meeting held to select a name for the community and post office, it was suggested that the town be named after Inman because of his years of service to the community. Another suggestion that "nix" best described the community, as it was "nothing but a crossroads!" An "a", Inman's middle initial, was added to "nix", arriving at the community's name - Nixa.
