Once just a wide spot in the road west of Springfield, the city of Republic has grown to nearly 15,000 residents to make it one of fastest growing "suburbs" of the Springfield metro area. Located along the US Highway 60 corridor, Republic has attracted large box stores such as Lowes and major restaurants in Ruby Tuesdays and Village Inn. When it comes to civic and community pride, Republic has taken the lead with superior recreational activities and a top rated park system. The new community center features a 24 hour fitness center through Cox Health Systems, an indoor walking track, two full basketball courts and an Aquatics Center that attracts visitors from nearby cities to experience "The Huna" wave/surf pool. Area golfers have two public courses to choose from in Republic with the Island Green Golf Club and Eagle Crest Golf Course. Since 1992, Republic has hosted its "Pumpkin Daze" festival on the first Saturday in October where participants experience the spirit of autumn in the Ozarks. The giant record-breaking pumpkins grown locally draw visitors from the entire region for parades, arts and crafts and old fashioned fun. This time honored tradition is family friendly to celebrate the harvest season like so many generations before them. Historically, Republic was once the home of the largest flourmills in the Midwest. Early developer R.C. Stone built the first flourmill in 1890 with a running capacity of 2000 barrels every twenty-four hours. During the years between 1900 and 1907, the mill was operated night and day serving as the area's main employer. Stone's flour products carried the slogan “The World is Our Field” and was shipped out to all sections of the United States. The Battle of Wilson’s Creek was fought 3 miles east of Republic on August 10, 1861, and marked the beginning of the Civil War in Missouri. Named for the stream that cross the area where the battle took place, it was the first major battle west of the Mississippi. Today, Wilson's Creek is the scene of reenactments and has been featured in several national films. The National Park Service historical visitor's center has a theater, exhibits and the largest collection of privately owned Civil War artifacts consisting of uniforms, weapons, flags, photographs and personal effects. The Republic School District is one of the top rated 3-A schools serving local students as well as those living in nearby Brookline and Battlefield.
